Billy Liar

1963

John Schlesinger
Director

Billy Fisher daydreams his way through his mundane life at least until a firework named Liz reappears...

Schlesinger's entry in the "Angry Young Man" genre of British films from the late fifties and 60s. Where America had a leather clad Brando, the Brits had milquetoast Billy Fisher.
Probably my least favourite entry in the cycle despite being very good, does that make sense?

Followed, 10 years later, by a TV series/remake featuring a more definitive Mr Shadrack in the form of Colin Jeavons.

Think this is the first time I've seen Ted Carroll listed anywhere.
I'd love to say that's Elisabeth Murray hanging at the supermarket, but I'm just not sure...
Some of those housewives look familiar, and so far I have failed to spot Schlesinger's cameo...
