Not much to be said really is there?

-The Sloth

I originally gave this a good review, probably out of relief it didn't turn out to be an unmitigated disaster. While it is a perfectly craftsmanlike film, there is not a single bit of originality present, and more importantly, absolutely no sense of wonder. It's just A New Hope with slightly different characters and lady stomrtroopers. Abrams is not a filmmaker; he is a contractor, hired by Disney to crank out an efficent two hour long money making machine. That's exactly what he did, and we, the audience, are poorer because of it. A New Hope was rough around the edges, but it had energy and heart. Even the much lambasted and derided prequels tried to capture some of that. This is a slick piece of machinery created by an industrial machine. Granted , that is what most movies are, but there is still room for creativity.

And just so you don't think I'm too much of a bitter nostalgic old fart, I thought Daisy Ridley was good, seeing Harrison Ford in his old element was equally great, BB-8 adorable (even if basically a chibi-fied R2D2), and I applaud Abrams' use of practical effects instead of over-reliance on CGI. I just wish it could have been the "more" that it should have been. And there are moments that come so close. . .so very close.
