Special Edition re-release for Alan Parker's very scary, very intense and very adult horror film. This just gets better each time I see it.
Unfortunately have to strongly disagree, as this is an empty exercise in style (like most of Parker's films) and is a poor adaption of the masterful source novel. Why bother to adopt a novel if you're going to ignore everything that made it good? DeNiro lazily rests on his acting laurels and phones it in, even more obvious with a distinctly second-tier cast. The whole thing would be forgotten if it weren't for the faint echoes of the controversy involving "Cosby good girl" Lisa Bonet's appareance in a X-rated film. Later scandals have sort of overtaken that tempest in a teapot, no?
Read the book, forget this mess, and hope maybe a good director will adapt it someday.
